April 2007: Teacher and Student of the Year Awards Recipients: A Special Leadership Award was presented to:

Robert M. Tomback, Ph.D.
Principal, Catonsville High School

Rob Tomback has been the Principal of Catonsville High School since 1995. During that time, he has implemented several school improvement programs. These include instituting both the Rising Scholars Program and the AVID program designed to increase minority achievement. He has increased course offerings designed to raise academic rigor for all students. He designed and implemented a ninth grade transition program. Both Baltimore Magazine and Newsweek have recognized the Catonsville High School as a high achieving high school. Because of these and many other reasons, including his excellent leadership, it is the pleasure of the Rotary Club of Catonsville to honor Robert M. Tomback, Ph.D., Principal of Catonsville High School.

The Teacher of the Year, 2007 was Allen Spurr

Allen Spurr joined the faculty of Catonsville High School in 1994 after two decades of working with Special Education Students and as a researcher in the area of Special Education. At Catonsville high School he is a teacher of Life Skills, working with Special Education Students. In 1987 he was recognized a the TABCO Special Educator of the Year. Allen is Chairman of the Catonsville High School Faculty Council and was a member of the CHS Centennial Committee. He serves as the Director of the Rolling Road Social Group for the Handicapped through Catonsville Recreation and Parks.
 

The recipient of the The Deborah St. John Scholarship Award was Matthew Wooten

Matthew Wooten is a Senior at Catonsville High School. He has a Grade Point Average of 4.0 and is ranked in the top 1% of his class. He has been on the Honor Roll and the Principal’s List since he began high school. He is a Maryland Commended Scholar and a member of the National Honor Society. Matthew has taken Advanced Placement Courses in History, Mathematics, and Music. He is a bronze metal winning tennis player, receiving the Unsung Hero Award in both 2005 and 2006. He is a member of the Pit Orchestra and a recipient of All County Jazz Honors.
 

February 2007: Fire Fighter and Police Officer of the Year Awards Recipients

The Fire Fighter of the Year Award was presented to Gregory Cook, Fire Fighter / Emergency Medical Technician

Gregory Cook was instrumental in the development of the Catonsville Fire Station #4 website that can be found at www.station4.org. If you visit the site you will learn about the history of Station #4 which was founded in 1887 and was originally located on Bloomsbury Road. You will be treated to photographs of local historic fires, current and historic fire equipment, a tour of the Station and notes on the recent activity of the Station personnel. This is a site worth visiting. FF/EMT Cook completed a most of the website on his own time. The site has already proved to be an educational and information tool for the community. In his regular duties, FF/EMT Cook performs well in emergency situations and is an asset to his shift and is an asset to his shift.

The Police Officer of the Year Award was presented to Derek Williams, Police Officer,

Derek Williams has been a member of the Baltimore County Police Department for five years and a sworn Police officer for three. In that short time he has shown to be a model police officer. He is agressive in his patrol tactics and tireless in his efforts to apprehend criminals. He possesses a natural instinct for detecting crimes and locating suspects. He is energetic and operates with an exceptional attitude and motivation to carry out his law enforcement mission. Officer Williams has been chosen precinct Officer of the Month twice. His criminal and enforcement statistics are amoung the highest in the precinct for 2006. Many of Officer Williams’ arrests have been for serious felony crimes such as robbery, burglary and auto thefts.
